The Dreambox is a Linux-powered DVB receiver for digital TV
and Radio programs, produced by German vendor
Dream Multimedia.
Features
There are several types of Dreambox according to the equipped
tuner module, which can be:
- DVB-S for satellite reception
- DVB-T for terrestrial reception
- DVB-C for cable connection
Dreambox supports own DreamCrypt conditional access (CA)
system, with software-emulated CA Modules (CAMs) available for
many alternate CA systems.
The built-in Ethernet interface allows Dreambox to access the
Internet. It also enables networked computers to access Dreambox
and the recordings on the internal hard disks on PVR models.
Software
In fact, the Dreambox is a multimedia computer uses
Linux-based firmware, named Enigma, which is developed
by
Dream Multimedia. The Enigma is a graphical user
interface (with interactive menus, buttons, icons, etc) built on
top of Linux commands, like Windows on top of MS-DOS commands.
The Enigma is user-upgradable firmware widely supported by a
lot of images, either released
officially by
Dream Multimedia or patched by third-party developers.
There are also many plugins and
utilities available that extend the
functionality and usability of Dreambox.
The first edition Enigma1 released early in 2001,
to be used on most Dreambox models and still well supported to
date. In 2006, the second edition Enigma2 released
with a number of new features, from a redesigned shell and user
interface to significant technical changes.

In 2007,
Dream Multimedia
introduced the DM 100 as a non-Linux based Dreambox receiver, but still featuring an Ethernet port
and a USB port.
