What is a Dreambox?

The Dreambox is a Linux-powered DVB receiver for digital TV and Radio programs, produced by German vendor Dream Multimedia.

There are several types of Dreambox according to the equipped tuner module, which can be:

  • DVB-S for satellite reception
  • DVB-T for terrestrial reception
  • DVB-C for cable connection

Dreambox supports own DreamCrypt conditional access (CA) system, with software-emulated CA Modules (CAMs) available for many alternate CA systems.

The built-in Ethernet interface allows Dreambox to access the Internet. It also enables networked computers to access Dreambox and the recordings on the internal hard disks on PVR models.

In fact, the Dreambox is a multimedia computer uses Linux-based firmware, named Enigma, which is developed by Dream Multimedia. The Enigma is a graphical user interface (with interactive menus, buttons, icons, etc) built on top of Linux commands, like Windows on top of MS-DOS commands.

The Enigma is user-upgradable firmware widely supported by a lot of images, either released officially by Dream Multimedia or patched by third-party developers. There are also many plugins and utilities available that extend the functionality and usability of Dreambox.

The first edition Enigma1 released early in 2001, to be used on most Dreambox models and still well supported to date. In 2006, the second edition Enigma2 released with a number of new features, from a redesigned shell and user interface to significant technical changes.

There are several models which could be classified according to the edition of Enigma:
